Signs your child isn't drinking enough
- Tired, grumpy or having trouble concentrating, especially later in the day
- A headache
- Going to the toilet less often
- Dark yellow pee
These signs can have other causes too. If you're worried, or your child is ill and drinks very little, contact your GP.
How much is enough?
The Netherlands Nutrition Centre (Voedingscentrum) advises children aged 4 to 13 to drink 1 to 1.5 litres of water or tea a day. On hot days and after sports, a little more.
Spread it over the day: a glass at breakfast, a bottle for school, a drink after school and something with dinner adds up faster than you'd think.
Making water the easy choice
- Keep it in sight. A filled bottle on the table gets used more than a tap in the kitchen.
- Make it tasty. A slice of cucumber, lemon or a few berries make water more fun without much sugar.
- Drink together. Children copy what they see. If you drink water at dinner, they're more likely to as well.
